Biography

Y.-W. Peter Hong received his B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan, in 1999, and his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, in 2005. He joined the Institute of Communications Engineering and the Department of Electrical Engineering in National Tsing Hua University (NTHU), Hsinchu, Taiwan, in Fall 2005, where he is now a Distinguished Professor and Associate Dean of EECS College. He is also Director of NTHU-LiteOn Joint Research Center. He was also a visiting scholar at University of Southern California during June-August of 2008, and at University of California at San Diego during August 2015-July 2016. He also served as Director of the Institute of Communications Engineering (2017-2020) and Associate Vice President of Research & Development at NTHU (2018-2022).

Research Interests:
His research interests include distributed signal processing for sensor networks and IoT, AI/ML for wireless communications, UAV and satellite communications, distributed learning and optimization, physical layer secrecy, cooperative communications, and PHY-MAC cross-layer designs for wireless networks.

Professional Services:
Dr. Hong is currently Senior Area Editor of IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing (2021-present) and, in the past, has also served on the editorial boards of IEEE Transactions on Communications, IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, and IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security. Dr. Hong has also served as guest editor of EURASIP Special Issue on Cooperative MIMO Multicell Networks and of IJSNET Special Issue on Advances in Theory and Applications of Wireless, Ad Hoc, and Sensor Networks. Dr. Hong was also a Distinguished Lecturer of IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc), and Secretary of IEEE ComSoc Communication Theory Technical Committee (CTTC).

In addition, Dr. Hong has also participated in many conference organization activities. He currently serves as Operations Co-Chair of 2025 IEEE Global Communications (Globecom), Symposium Co-Chair of Communication Theory Symposium at 2025 IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC), and Publicity Co-Chair of 2025 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference (WCNC). Previously, he has also served as General Co-Chair of 2023 IEEE Communications Theory Workshop, Workshop Co-Chair of 2020 IEEE Global Communications Conference, Track Co-Chair of PHY fundamentals track in 2018 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference (WCNC), Webmaster of 2017 IEEE Information Theory Workshop (ITW), Publicity Co-Chair of ISITA2010/ISSSTA 2010, the Publication Co-Chair of VTC2010-Spring, and TPC Track Co-Chair of the track on “Cognitive Radio and Cooperative Communications” for VTC2010-Spring, and the TPC Track Co-Chair of the track on “Wireless Communications” for WPMC2012. Locally, he also served as General Chair of 2019 Taiwan Telecommunications Conference (previously National Symposium on Telecommunications), General Co-Chair of 2018 National Symposium on Telecommunications (NST), TPC Co-Chair of Frontiers of Communications and Networking Workshop (2014, 2015), and TPC Co-Chair of WASN 2009. He was also the Organizing Co-Chair of 2012 IEEE Signal Processing Society Summer School on Compressive Sensing and MIMO Signal Processing Systems. Dr. Hong has also served as TPC members for numerous conferences, such as ICC, Globecom, WCNC, ICASSP, APSIPA ASC, RWS, IWCMC, MWCN, IWASN … etc.

Dr. Hong is currently Vice-Director of IEEE Communications Society Asia-Pasific Board (2022-present) and, in the past, has also served as Co-Chair of the Chapters Coordination Committee (2020-2021), Co-Chair of the Information Services Committee (2016-2019), and Co-Chair of the Technical Affairs Committee (2014-2015). He was also Chair and Vice Chair of IEEE Communications Society Taipei Chapter for 2017-2018 and 2015-2016, respectively. He was also an APSIPA Distinguished Lecturer (2014-2015). He is also an elected member of IEEE Signal Processing Society Technical Committee on Signal Processing for Communications and Networking (SPCOM) (two terms 2021-2023, 2024-2026) and the SP Society Representative on the IEEE Internet of Things Magazine (IoT-M) Management Committee (2022-2025). He was also an elected member of the IEEE SP Society Technical Committee on Information Forensics and Security (2014-2016).
